THE LEAGUE OF FREEWORLDS
The League of Free Worlds is a loose confederation of worlds stretching from the Mapepire
subsector to the Mal'Gnar subsector.  Most of the member states are systems that were formally
part of Die Weltbund.  Some revolted against DW rules, a few were overexploited worlds whose
colonists were abandoned by their nobles.
Since their inclusion in the Comsentient Alliance, Die Weltbund has ceased activity against
the LOFW.  In
keeping with their new status as a civilized nation, LOFW has ceased covert action against its
former masters.    In the year 1000, the capital of LOFW was formally transferred to Alekhine.

Each member state of LOFW elects or selects  8 representatives  to the League's Diet  on
Alekhine.  Each representative  serves for 3 years.  The Chairmanship of the Diet rotates
between the member worlds every six months.    Due to the widespread distance between the
few worlds of the LOFW, the Diet acts more as an diplomatic service than an interstellar
government.   It negotiates treaties, handles interstellar trade agreements & military alliances,
allowing each member state to go its own political way.   The sift to Alekhine underscored the
political fragility of the alliance without the threat of Die Weltbund. The worlds have joined
other political entities or drifted into regional alliances. These alliances are:  Friedland with
the Mapepire Cluster; Hardass &  Arbeitung Drei  with Guildheim & St. Foy;  & Alekhine &
Macchu Picchu with the Imperium.

In Military matters, The various  worlds depend upon  various alliances.  Friedland has a
defense pact with the worlds of the Mapepire Cluster.   Hardass has  a treaty with Guildheim &
St. Foy.  Alekhine & Macchu Picchu has an alliance with the Mal' Gnar.   Also, there are
mercenaries Freidland has agreements with Webrunner corsairs.   Dark Goddesses Capt. Rani
St. James' Varangers squadron has a base in the Hardass system since 1016 & several of her
ships patrols are always insystem.   Arbeitung Drei had negotiated an agreement with Bette
Noire until the collapse of her House of Lords group. Currently, Arbeitung Drei is negotiating
( with clandestine Imperial dilpomatic help ) with Havilkor St. Foy & his independent corsair
command unit, the Havilkorps.  There is also considerable intrigue in the Liberty subsector,
with several forces, LOFWIA, St. Foy, Guildheim, The Imperium, & Die Weltbund all
competingfor influence.  There has been negotiations ongoing for a formal alliance between
Guildheim, Hardass, Abeitlung Drei, Fraldanhylla, Pearl of Zandvoort, Ixchel, St. Foy, &
Nervenheilanstalt.  Secretly encouraged by the Third Imperium, talks have come to an impass
due to St. Foy's pulling out of the talks.

in the Die Weltbund sector.

709 . Abeitung Drei's B-Class starport destroyed by  the Cosyht pirate group.  
Rebuilt only as E-Class due to declining exports.
712-713.  Pirates, free traders,  & rebels are deported to Die Weltbund planets in the
Mapepire subsector as convict labor.
720.  Secret meeting between rebels groups from Jeldemnar, Die Weltbund,
Abetung Drei & Schreck result in creation of the League of Free Worlds.  Hans
Freude elected consul.
756-758.  Rebellion on Jeldemnar.  Rebels seize 5 large mining operations.  DW
navy bombards all rebel held mines in 758.  Surviving rebels are executed or
deported to Die Weltbund.
777.  Dark Goddesses establish a base on Die Weltbund.
781.  New B-Class starport on Die Weltbund finished after 4 decades of work.
788.  Martin Gerecht, consul for LOFW establishes a contract with Beaumonde
Industries, smuggling out strategic materials for armaments.
790-823.  Expansion of Die Weltbund Grand Navy sees many recruits from Die
Weltbund, Jeldemnar, Fraldanhylla, & Abetung Drei join up.  Many of these
recruits form LOFW cells inside the navy.
828.  Donnerplatz Putsch.  Local LOFW rebels, LOFW cadres inside the navy &
corsairs seize the naval base of Donnerplatz on Die Weltbund.  Rebels seize 6
cruisers, 7 destroyers, 18 SDB's.2 Battleships, 5 cruisers & 3 destroyers destroyed or
disabled.  1 Strike carrier, 2 destroyers & 4 patrol craft flee to Maximummer.   Start
of LOFW war of independence.
828-834 LOFW War.
829.  Rebellions on Jeldemnar and Abeitung Drei.
830.  Rebels on Fraldanhylla seize merchant shipping & flee to Die Weltbund.
Rebellion on Jeldemnar crushed with brutality.
831-833.  Battle of Die Weltbund.  Naval task force hampered by rebel naval vessels
& corsair acting as commerce raiders.  4 attempted landings on Die Weltbund
beaten off between 831 & 832.   Beaumonde & several Mapepire worlds
clandestinely aid the rebels.  After the loss of 1 Battleship, 6 cruisers, 4 destroyers &
23 guboats, DW forces withdraw, leaving Die Weltbund's cities & starport in ruins.
833.  League of Free Worlds declared on Friedland (nee Die Weltbund).  The new
government is recognized by the Mapepire Cluster, St. Foy & Guildheim.
836.  Fraldanhylla successfully revolts, with its naval squadron going over to the
rebels.  Becomes the second LOFW world.
840.  Fraldanhylla becomes an Imperial client state.  An Imperial Scout Service
base is established.
844-867.  Ongoing clandestine war between Die Weltbund & LOFW.  Guildheim,
St. Foy, & Beaumonde give secret support to LOFW.   Support ends with DW raids
against Beaumonde & other Mapepire planets.
888-911.  Influx of refugees from Jeldemar, mostly on tramps & corsairs.
893-899.  First Hardass revolt.   Crushed brutally by DW navy.
897.  LOFW offers letters of marque for the first time.
901-908.  Die Weltbund/Imperial War.  Pressure on LOFW worlds eased as DW's
navy is crushed in the fighting.  LOFW provides invaluable intelligence to the
Imperial forces.
912-933.  Second Hardass revolt.  DW driven off after  years of brutal fighting.   
Poor showing of DW naval units encourage increased smuggling & piracy.
918.  Guildheim & Beaumonde establish embassies on Friedland.
924.  League of Free Worlds Insurgent Army (LOFWIA) formed by Thys Fiedler to
aid the rebels on hardass.  Grows to 33,000 men & women, 250 AFV's, & 63 ships
by the end of the Hardass conflict.
933.  Treaty of Guildheim.  Mutual protection & free trade pact made between
Beaumonde, Guildheim, Mapepire Balsyn, St. Foy, & LOFW.
945.  Treaty of Uist.  Secret treaty between St. Foy, Guildheim, & LOFW providing
bases for LOFWIA in St. Foy & Guildheim's systems.
946.  LOFWIA agents hijack two DW frigates.  They reappear  in 949 in the
Friedland navy as the Freedom & Redemption.
947-951.  Successfully revolt of  Arbeitung Drei under its local naval commander.
965.  Imperial recognition of LOFW. Embassy established  on Friedland.
976.  Die Weltbund, in the treaty of Schloss Adler, recognizes the League of Free
World.
1000-1004.  The various LOFW worlds become havens for pirate shroudships.
1000. Administrative  capital  of LOFW shifted to Alekhine.  As Lockharin of
Alekhine becomes Chairman. Begin of LOFW decline.
1011-1024.  Military buildup in the LOFW worlds make the LOFWIA redundant.  
Many LOFWIA units go rogue during this period.
1018.  Alekhine & Macchu Picchu sign mutual defense treaty with the Mal'Gnar.
1033. STERNADLER INCIDENT.  The Stern-Liner 6000 tonne liner Sternadler
found drifting
dead in space off Qat, all crew & passengers dead.  DW intelligence traces attack
back to LOFWIA.   League of Sophonts (LOS) end financial support of LOFWIA.
1035.  Under Imperial & Die Weltbund diplomatic pressure, the League of Free
Worlds repudiate the LOFWIA. Many League officials now become LOFWIA
targets.
1037-1042.  Hired mercs & Dark Goddesses corsair eradicate LOFWIA outposts in
the Friedland system.
1043.  Martin Wiegel of Friedland, Chairman.  Trys (& fails) to relocate capital
back to Friedland.
1044. Fraldanhylla formally resigns from LOFW.  Same year DW naval units raid
Hardass, killing 17 & injuring 234.
1056.  Chairman Hiu Jonsell  murdered by LOFWIA.
1060.  Imperial scoutship Keveiuh hijacked by LOFWIA on Arbeitung Drei.  PIlots
ransomed
2 years later.
1061.  Thys Transport founded on Arbeitung Drei by Thys Hagen.  Folds in 1078
due to piracy & clandestine activities by Parallel Lines.
1064.  Alexa  Hitomi Nadja Darkhstarr, Dark Goddess corsair, betrayed & captured
on Friedland, & handed over to the Imperium.  Dark Goddesses respond by raiding
Friedland-flagged shipping(1064-1073).
1072.  Arbeitung Drei system declared free of last LOFWIA base.
1082-1085.  LOFW based corsairs (with Imperial backing) raid Die Weltbund space.
1090-1094.  St. Foy-Die Weltbund War.  LOFW volunteers & corsairs participate in
large numbers.  Arbeitung Drei becomes important staging base for volunteers &
supplies from the Mapepire Cluster.
1098. Treaty of Makera.   Nonaggression treaty brokered by the Third Imperium
between Die Weltbund & the League of Free Worlds.
1100-1104.  Intense terrorists attacks on LOFW worlds & ships by persons
unknown.
1107.  Negotiations between Die Weltbund & LOFW on Alekhine disrupted by
bomb which destroys the DW delegation as well as 324 Alekhines.
1109-1113.  LOFWIA activities on Hardass overthrows government & shuts down
mining.  Peace finally achieved by use of mercenaries under Rani St. James.
1112.  Bombships destroy Beaufort liner Tal Oderling off Arbeitung Drei.   434
killed.
1114.  House of Lords corsair group wipes out LOFW controlship in the Arbetung
Drei system.
1115-1118.  Imperial brokered attempts to bring peace in the Liberty Hall subsector.
 Fails after St. Foy's representatives walk out on talks..
1120.  Elements of the 33rd Luftgrenadier Regt.  relocate to Arbeitung Drei.  
Reorganized as the Fhalkor Brigade, a mercenary marine unit under  Viktor Nass
(pseudonym of Horst Reiner, former Major of the 33rd Regt.).  Nervenheilanstat
starts secret talks on joining LOFW.
1121.  Secret talks begin on closer alliance between  Guildheim, Arbeitung Drei,
Hardass, &
Nervenheilanstat.
1124.  Imperial brokered secret talks on Guildheim aboard the liner Desa Gerys
between the Third Imperium, Guildheim, LOFW, St. Foy,  & Die Weltbund discuss
cooperation against the LOFWIA.  LOFWIA Attempt to steal the shroudship
'Prince of Assassins' for use as terrorist ship.  LOFWIA agents attack the Desa
Gerys with bombships with minial success.

LOFW PERSONA
HORST MEINEKE:  785688.  PILOT 2, VACC 2, LASER 2, PROSPECTING 2,
COMPUTER 2, SHIP'S  BOAT 1, CAROUSING 1.   AGE: 44.   Famed belter
operating out of Hardass's Caracol's Drift, Horst is captain of the Magdalena K, an
old SDB converted into a seeker. A reserve member of Hardass'  Reaction Force, he's
active in anti-LOFWIA sweeps in the system. His Caracol's Seekers, LTD, is an old
family concern dating back to the colonial days of Hardass, operating 5 seekers in the
drift & 2 400 tonne traders converted into bulk carriers. Friendly, generous,  &
extroverted, Horst is a ruthless businessman & a relentless enemy,

Diplomat from Arbeitung Drei, Daia was recently recalled from Guildheim &
reassigned to St. Foy as 2nd Secretary.  A former Dark Goddess corsair, her old
profession makes her a specialist in dealing with corsairs & clandestine organizations.
 She also has close ties to many of the members of the St. Foy royal family disaffectd
by the current Duke's reckless diplomatic adventures.  Serene & dignified, Daia
presents a iron fist in a  velvet glove front which most people she meets don't realize is
her true persona.  Though not a normally hot-tempered person, she does not suffer
fools gladly & will find some way  (social or diplomatic) to put the offender in his or
her place.

BANRUI QWEGH:  96C985.  VACC SUIT 3, PROSPECTING 2, PILOT 1,
COMPUTER 1, MECH. 2, LASER 1, BLADE 1.   AGE 42.   Belter from Hardass
system, Banrui commands the seeker "Klaerty's Folly", an ice asteroid 1/2 km long by
1/4 km wide. Besides legitimate prospecting, Banrui also indulges in smuggling goods
& passengers in and out of the Hardass system.  He has a score to settle with
LOFWIA for killing his partner Asrakh Jestokol.  He is assisting by his wife
Mira(engineer) i, sons Katal & Rolf, & Asrakh's nephew Eric Mannheim.
Banrui is a cold, calculating  man whose willing help anyone for a price.

MAGDALENA KARLSRUHE:  668AA7.  LAISON 2, ADMIN 2, COMPUTER 1,
BROKER 2, PISTOL 1, GAUSS 1, INTERROGATION 2, BRIBERY 1.  AGE 48. Sunny
& charismatic, the blonde, blue-eyed bronze-skinned beauty is the director of
operations for Geisthaus LLC, a mining concern on Hardass whose majority owner is
Deva des Plaines.  Honest & protective of company profits, Magdalena is also very
protective of the safety of her workers.  She is ruthless in dealing with theft & keeps a
large security detail of former marine & naval personnel.

MANFRED BAUMEISTER:  AA678E.  ADMIN 1, NAVIGATION 2, LEADER 1,
TACTICS 2, SMG 2, CUTLASS 1, COMPUTER 1, JOT 2, INTERROGATION 1.  
Captain of the "Valkyrie", 2 400 tonne SDB of the Abeitung Drei Defense Force,  
Manfred is a former Die Weltbund Naval officer who defected in 1106.  Known as the
"Sleeping Cat" for his laidback & laconic demeanor & willingness to avoid a needless
fight, Manfred is really a quite competent officer.  He bears a grudge against his
former DW comrades.   However he can be very tolerant of pirates as long they avoid
raiding in his jurisdiction,
One of the main weaknesses of the League of Free Worlds was their lack of a
permanent standing instellar naval/military force able to react to interstellar
aggression & engage in punitive strikes against LOFW's enemies.   The League of
Free Worlds Insurgent Army was created in 924 by act of Diet.  The core group of
LOFWIA was a mercenary naval squadron under Lars Neisch(878-940) .  A native
of Hardasss, Neisch had  been for years negotiating & merging with various corsair
bands, mercs, & Die Weltbund renegades forming the Hellgamites in 915.  With
clandestine aid from the Third Imperium, LOS, & merchant concerns from the
Mapepire Cluster & the Trelyn domain; the Hellgamites made spectacular raids
against DW shipping & successfully harassed Grand Navy units trying to raid the
LOFW.   In 924 the LOFWIA was unofficially incorporated as the military arm of
the LOFW as the League of Free Worlds Insurgent army.  The same year it
managed the most spectacular success of its history the dual assaults on the
merchant academies on Drei Farben & Schloss Adler, destroying the academies &
the Stern-Hansa offices & docks attached to them.  Besides the material damage,
the great loss of trained ship personnel & cadets starting the slow decline of
Stern-Hansa. In the following decades, the LOFWIA, often in concert with corsairs
& friendly naval powers made it too costly to reconquer its lost systems.

Less than a hundred years after it's founding the LOFWIA lost much of its military
& political clout.  Between military buildup caused by peaceful prosperity &
alliances with powerful neighbors, the need for the LOFWIA waned.  By the 1020's
many LOFWIA units went rogue, either waging a private terrorist campaign
against Die Weltbund planets & trading partners or going pirate.  Many cells waged
a private war agains their former patrons, the LOFW.  These latter cells though,
only lasted until the 1050's, the last, Rad Geist, being wiped out in a gun battle
with mercs on Hardass.

Many of the units gone corsair found the going rough as many of the established
corsairs found the vicious nature of LOFWIA raids detrimental  to their business.  
This created an ongoing war between LOFWIA & various corsairs bands til this
day .

The anti-DW LOFWIA groups found the lack of bases & logistic support weakened
their efforts, making the multi-ship raids & large operations a thing of the past.  By
the 1070's many of the cells had taken to working for Tuablin & other criminal
organizations as smugglers, escorts, & assasins.

LOFWIA  early on made the use of  cargo vessels loaded with explosives to offset
the powerful Die Weltbund navy.  After losing much of their financial backing, the
bombships declined as LOFWIA vessels became too few & too valuable to waste.  
That changed with two events:  1. the change to piracy of many LOFWIA units in
the 1020's & 2. the arrival of Deschord in 1086.
Deschord was an Imperial noble who served a psychotic Countess who tried to
enlarge her domain in 1083-1085.   Taking advantage of the distraction of the 4th
Frontier War, she used automated bombships to attack Imperial naval vessels.  
Stopped in an attempt to nuke an Imperial naval base with their own supply ships,
she was arrested along with of her subordinates.   Deschord escaped & eventually
made his way to St. Foy, where in late 1086 he made contact with the LOFWIA.  A
brillant naval officer, he revitalized the LOFWIA terror campaigns.   In 1122, he
was given command of the Obelisk project, testing it in both Die Weltbund space,
destroying 2 destroyers & a cruiser; & in the Trelyn Domain, destroying two naval
vessels there.  

Beaumonde Industries (Beaumonde/Mapepire) has been long a supplier of ships &
munitions for the LOFWIA as well as the League of Free Worlds.  Under Reyno
Beaumonde, LOFWIA would become the test group for new military technology.  
Since Reyno's death, the company's support of LOFWIA has become more covert,
mostly served through offworld branches of Beaumonde Industries.   It has been
rumored that some Beaumonde techs are working in the field with LOFWIA cells.    
Beaumonde's greatest contribution has been the creation of The Obelisk,   
LOFWIA's  spacing-faring Meson gun platform.  Using glaciation units to disguise
it as an ice asteroid,  The Obelisk is the ultimate in terror weapons, designed to
jump in a system, hit a target & immediately jump out again.  The shipyard built
The Obelisk in the same workshop they were constructing a test Meson gun for the
Die Weltbund naval.  Moved out in a jump-capable repair dock under cover as the
Die Weltbund  Meson gun, the Obelisk jumped out to the St. Foy system.  Reaching
the LOFWIA base, the dock converted into the bridge, drives, & powerplant for The
Obelisk.

LOFWIA organiztion is currently splintered, but there are three major cells which
are highly dangerous.  The first is under Alec Maastricht, based in the asteroid belt
of the St. Foy.  This the cell which Deschord operates under.  Mostly terrorist &
piratical in nature, this cell is active in targeting LOFW, Die Weltbund, & Imperial
targets.  This cell originally operated out of the Guildheim & Hardass systems, but
driven out.  Currently under the protection of the Duchy of St. Foy.   The second is
the Haken cartel,  operating several clandestine shipping concerns for Tuablin as
well as  bodyguards & enforcers.  Named for Ernst Haken, its founder.  Currently
headed by Carlotta Halle.   The third operates as pirates & smugglers in the
Mapepire, Liberty Hall , Harem, & Die Welbund subsectors.  Tends to operate more
in the DW subsector as it gained recent  protection from the government of
Alekhine.  Current head is Max Essendorf, a former DW naval captain.
HAKEN CARTEL
The Haken Cartel  is one of major players in the clandestine trade in arms, drugs,
ships, & human cargo in the Mapepire, Liberty Hall, Die Weltbund, Delta, Mtechi'
Alagwa,  Middle, Darlking Regions & NE Middle Beyond subsectors.  Started as the
Haken Group in the 970's the group expanding absorbing other LOFWIA cells  in
the 1000's after Tuablin became its major financial backer.  Primarly working for
Tuablin, it has done jobs for other concerns such as Beaumonde Industries, The
Deathlords, Stern-Hansa, other LOFWIA groups.  It also engages in snatch & grab
operations of skilled & unskilled labor; & intelligence operations.  Its operations
are aided & financed in part by various transport companies & a group of 'free
traders' in its employ.  It also has arrangements with another secret partner of
Tuablin,  Parallel Lines.

TRANDESCENE CHARITIES:  Based on Guildheim, this non-profit transport
company uses charity work  to cover its activities.  Though unsuspected by the
authorities, Trandescene has come under surveilance by some of the corsair groups,
particularly Bette Noire.

SANGHUJ CHARTERS:  Based on Intercourse/Delta, this company runs cargo &
tourists to and from the Mapepire Cluster worlds.  It uses 14 old subsidized liners:  
V. Hujrty,  O. L. Konnor, W. W. Kaaspet,  A.  Arthur,  I. R.  Thuisert,   J. B. Gunert,
O.  Loring,   S. K. Montart,  A. Willow,
J.  P.  Destine,  M.  Fouldere,   G. H.  Moldern,  A. G. Bertol,  L . L. Cavery.

CHASE-KILLIAWAY LINES:   A cargo transport line operating from Maggies's
Nipples.  Mostly operating old or stolen vessels.  One of the major suppliers of hulls
for bombships.  Imperial Intelligence is currently investigating this oufit.

BAGNOR-LITTERN LINES:  Listed as (but not actually) a part of Parallel Lines
holdings, BL operates a fleet of 15-20 (constantly in flux) of transports in the 400
tonne range plus two 1000 tonners, the Jollert Manhett & the Yves Kerowan.

'FREE TRADERS':   Hakens suns several smugglers under the cover of free traders,
most are just onetime, one use hulls, but there are two of note.

MACON VALCYTE:   Trader.  Age 36.   667A75.  BRIBERY -2,  TRADER-2,
COMPUTER-2,
CARUSING-1,  BROKER-1, CUTLASS-1,  SMG-2, VACC SUIT-1, PILOT-1,
ADMIN-1   A nephew of the head of Trandescene,  Macon operates the 400 tonne
trader, the 'Ylda Mague'.  He drifts in & out of the Liberty Hall subsector, often
unseen for months.  Long-gray hair, brown eyes, pale skin.  Macon always wears
gloves, & carries two small  SMG'S in shoulder holsters at all times.

SENDRA WING  LOOS:  Pirate.  Age 38.   9A9667.  INTERROGATION-2,  
GAUSS-3, PILOT-2,  NAV.-1,  COMPUTER-2, COMMO-1,  TACTICS-1,
BROKER-1, LEADER-1.   Blonde, dark-skinned, black eyes,  Sendra is a coldly
efficient captain with a picked crew that makes up for some of the trader skills she
lacks.  Sendra's ship the 'Errant Comet' is a familar site in the Liberty Hall
subsector.  It was her ship that smuggled in the assault team for Deschord that
failed to take the 'Prince of Assassins'.
'KILREAHEN SHRIKE'
The Kilreahen Shrike is a Chameleon class corsair stationed in the St. Foy
system.  Part of Deschord's group it is commanded by Desxcha Jonz, one of
LOFWIA's most talented & ruthless captains.  Jonz is known for leaving no one
alive on any ship she takes.

DESXCHA JONZ:  CORSAIR  AGE 36. UPP: 7AA795.   PILOT-3, LASER-2,
VACC SUIT-2, COMPUTER-3,  NAVIGATION-3, TACTICS-2, BLADE-2
Long Brunette hair worn coiled about her head, brown eyes, golden-brown tan.
Charismatic,, talented & very psychotic, Desxcha (along with her sister Nedragh)
 were the only survivors when their family's free trader 'Vespa Wind'  was
attacked by a Die Welbund  patrol craft.  Serving as impressed officers aboard a
2000 tonne Stern-Hansa freighter they were rescued by a LOFWIA pirate ship.  
Joining the pirate's crew,  she connivied her way up to command of the corsair,
otherthrowing the old captain.  Renaming the ship the 'Rage of Ardatha'(her
dead mother's name), she became a thorn in the side of Stern-Hansa.  In 1114 she

Jeldemnar.   The LOFWIA cell there(the second oldest in the Beyond) still

system from Die Weltbund tyranny.   The main strike force, the Stormriders
have made life untenable for Die Weltbund ships without a strong escort.

The current population of Jeldemnar is 48,565 (down from a peak of 101,045 in
984) scattered among hideouts on Jeldemnar itself & 18 asteroids & 6 asteroid
ships.  The current capital is the asteroid Ixchelon, a heavily armed nickel-iron
asteroid.

The total naval combat strength of the LOFWIA in the Jeldemnar system is the
asteroid ship Retaliation & her similar armed sisters the Revenge & Nemesis;  
the captured 10,000 tonne fuel processing ship Yves Kortland (nee  Ernst
Braun); the armed 100 tonne Seekers The Keeper, Rutter, Kon Loring & M. Y.

The current Captain-General, Manacho  Shiraz Mann has thrown down the
